House on ECR, Kannathur
Set on a pristine 5-acre site along the ECR beach in Kannathur, Chennai, this oceanfront residence was conceived as a linear sanctuary embracing uninterrupted sea views from every space. The house stretches parallel to the shoreline, with a subtle elevation at the entry level to offer a dramatic, framed view of the horizon—a visual crescendo following a long, vegetated driveway that gently ramps to the main porch.
A sequence of staggered parallel walls choreographs the visitor’s movement, gradually revealing glimpses of the ocean before opening to a full panorama beyond an infinity-edge waterbody. Private spaces—bedrooms and bathrooms—are carefully oriented for privacy while capturing different vantages of the seascape. Toward the rear, the home theatre and office open into secluded courtyards, maintaining quietude without sacrificing light or openness.
A mid-level infinity pool, dramatically cantilevered over the staff quarters, includes a playful slide from the master suite. Passive cooling is achieved through strategic orientation, harnessing prevailing sea breezes and cooling from surrounding water bodies, allowing semi-open communal areas to remain naturally ventilated. The beach itself is drawn into the home’s domain with a curated blend of sand and paved patios, while a dense green shrub wall provides both privacy and security at the ground level.
