Set within a gated community near Kalote Lake, and surrounded by the serene rural landscape, Mehr was conceived as a contemporary weekend retreat—a home that harmonizes modern comfort with vernacular sensibilities.
The design responds to its natural setting and tight plot constraints with a layout that maximizes open-to-sky spaces, creating verandas and service courts that serve both functional and experiential roles. The house is structured around large internal volumes that offer uninterrupted cross-ventilation and framed vistas to the surrounding hills and water bodies.
The ground level accommodates the living and dining areas, kitchen, two guest bedrooms, and staff quarters—all organized to encourage a seamless flow between interior and exterior spaces. The private bedrooms on the upper level overlook the central double-height living area, enhancing spatial connectivity and visual drama.
Custom-designed pivoted screen panels in the bedrooms create an ever-changing play of light and shadow, reinforcing the home’s connection to its natural rhythms. A commissioned artwork in the master bedroom narrates the personal history of the family, grounding the space in intimacy and identity.
A tactile and earthy material palette—including fire bricks, hand-applied lime plaster, in-situ cement mosaic, and locally sourced brown stone—anchors the house in its rural context, offering both visual warmth and long-term durability. Every detail, from the graphic openable screens to the art-sensitive interiors, contributes to a retreat that is at once low-maintenance, site-responsive, and deeply personal.
