Planned within the BAPS headquarters complex in Sarangpur, Rajkot, the Congregation Centre was envisioned as a sacred space for devotees to have darshan of their revered saint, Swamiji. Designed to accommodate large gatherings, the facility balances spiritual intimacy with practical considerations for crowd management, comfort, and health.
The centre is organized as a composition of indoor and outdoor courts strategically placed at different levels to optimize sightlines toward the central stage where Swamiji would deliver his blessings. These tiered spaces allow for an egalitarian viewing experience, ensuring visibility for all while maintaining the sanctity of the event.
A defining feature of the indoor congregation space is a long corridor running parallel to the main hall, separated from the crowd by large transparent glass panels. This allows Swamiji to have visual contact with devotees while ensuring a controlled, sterile environment—particularly critical in times of heightened health concerns.
The outdoor courts are thoughtfully shaded with indigenous, broad-canopied trees, providing comfort and a spiritual connection with nature. Along one edge of the main hall, large doors open entirely into these courtyards, dissolving the boundary between inside and out, and allowing for a seamless flow of air, light, and people during large events.
Back-of-house facilities—including sanitation and storage—are discreetly placed at the rear of the hall, oriented toward the outer edge of the complex to avoid disrupting the sanctity of the congregation space.
The structure itself is column-free, achieved through wide-span construction techniques, ensuring unobstructed views and flexible usage. The interior is flooded with natural light via well-placed skylights, while High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans maintain thermal comfort during the intense summers of Gujarat.
With its sensitive spatial planning and attention to climate, visibility, and hygiene, the BAPS Congregation Centre serves as both a spiritual haven and a resilient architectural solution for large-scale community gatherings.
