Auditorium – Bombay House, Tata Group Headquarters, Mumbai

As part of the revitalization of the iconic Bombay House, headquarters of the Tata Group in South Mumbai, a need was identified for a state-of-the-art auditorium facility within the building’s basement—a space defined by its spatial constraints and structural complexity, including multiple columns and limited height.

The challenge was to create an environment that felt generous, inclusive, and immersive, despite its inherent limitations. The planning carefully negotiated the column grid, ensuring that the space felt uncompromised in its functionality and visual clarity. Special attention was given to making the auditorium accessible and welcoming to differently abled users, integrating universal design principles seamlessly into circulation and seating.

To address the limited floor-to-ceiling height, the auditorium was designed in a stepped format, optimizing sightlines and ensuring clear visibility of the stage from every seat. A custom-designed acoustic ceiling with seamlessly integrated lighting was developed using flowing fins that not only enhanced sound performance but also subtly guided the viewer’s gaze toward the stage, reinforcing a sense of orientation and focus.

Seating was tailored for both comfort and warmth, with lightweight profiles and veneered backs introducing tactile richness into the otherwise dark-toned space, which was intentionally subdued to emphasize the performance area.

The lobby area was conceived as more than just a transitional space—it functions as a museum-like pre-function zone, showcasing archival photographs from the era of J.R.D. Tata. A standout feature is a 3D textured wall, which evolves from the iconic Tata logo, acting as both an artistic installation and a brand narrative device.

The result is a thoughtfully detailed, contemporary facility embedded within a historic structure—one that honors the legacy of Tata while supporting the group’s forward-looking cultural and corporate activities.
