The Dukes Retreat, Khandala
Retreats are often envisioned as escapes — tranquil getaways nestled in nature, offering serenity and renewal. The Dukes Retreat in Khandala, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Western Ghats, is one such destination. Long admired for its peaceful ambience, the property was envisioned to evolve into a versatile venue catering to destination weddings, exotic theme parties, and large corporate gatherings — all while remaining deeply rooted in the natural landscape.
The arrival experience was reimagined with a dramatic sloping beak-shaped roof, designed to shelter ceremonial processions and welcome guests with a sense of grandeur. This leads into an expansive, elevated covered spine — a wide access corridor thoughtfully integrated around an existing water body and mature trees, preserving the site’s natural character.
On one side of this spine are three distinct conference halls; on the other, a sequence of pre-function areas, restrooms, and service spaces including the kitchen. The pathway culminates in a sweeping, valley-facing lawn, offering panoramic views of the Ghats — an ideal setting for open-air events and quiet reflection alike.
The banquet hall extension opens into a semi-open verandah featuring a stretched fabric roof, serving as a transitional buffer between the indoor venue and the lush greens beyond. Throughout the project, the expression of materiality embraces a rustic yet luxurious palette — a harmonious dialogue between built form and nature.
