An Ode to Memory: The Purple Tower

The 14-storeyed residential tower stands where a 110-year-old villa once bloomed under a canopy of vibrant purple bougainvillea. This historic villa, cloaked in flowering vines and memories, left behind not just a footprint but a spirit. As a tribute to the old landscape, a small portion of the bougainvillea—growing along the compound wall facing the street—was carefully preserved, threading a fragment of the past into the new.

The building’s material palette and façade colours draw directly from the striking hues of the bougainvillea, serving as a visual ode to the villa that once stood proud. This chromatic gesture re-establishes a sensory connection to the site’s heritage, offering continuity between past and present.

Each of the 13 upper levels houses a single luxury residence, accessible via both private and common elevators, reinforcing exclusivity and privacy. Upon entry, the apartment opens onto a generously landscaped deck foyer that mediates the transition from public to private life. From here, the layout diverges: to one side lie the guest-facing spaces—the living, dining, and open-plan kitchen—designed for hosting and collective engagement. To the other side, a more intimate wing unfolds into private bedrooms and family zones, ensuring a quiet retreat.

This dual-wing plan ensures a fluid yet deliberate separation between social and personal realms, all within the generous scale of a single-floor dwelling. The interiors are oriented to capture natural light and coastal breezes, framing select views and anchoring the home in its seaside context.

More than just a contemporary residential building, this structure is a living memorial, where architecture honours memory—not through mimicry, but through reinterpretation, restraint, and respect.
